Conversations with Norma Kamali
Posted 10/04/2010 by Lara
Thursday, I joined fashion designer Norma Kamali for the kicked off of her wellness series, “Conversations: A Dialogue on Wellness Solutions” at the Museum of Modern Art. “The planet we live on is not like it was at any other time. In order to survive fast food farming technology and the toxic environment, we must face our problems head on with practical solutions,” said Kamali. Change doesn’t happen over night but by educating her piers and spreading awareness we can all work together for a solution. So in front of a live audience, she showed a movie featuring two-minute conversations with notable experts in fitness, health, beauty and nutrition. Followed by a panel discussion and Q&A session.
Honored guests included choreographer, Twyla Tharp, founder of Aveda and Intelligent Nutrients skin care, Horst Rechelbacher, spiritual counselor and author of “Shadows On the Path”, Abdi Assadi, filmmaker of “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead”, Joe Cross, vegan and raw food chef, Chef Matteo, and more (Nancy Shaw, Magen Banwart, Dr. David Colbert and Physique 57).
I thought over all the speeches we’re good. The highlight for me was Twyla Tharp telling the audience the most important thing is “to just move, our bodies just want to move”. Anyone who’s ever been through a rough patch knows how easy it is to emotionally give up and just not want to get out of bed. Ultimately, the only cure for that and to turn your life around in any capacity is to move. Sometimes, it’s the simple things that we need reminding of. I could stand to start moving a little earlier in the morning.
I’ve also thought a lot about Abdi Assadi saying “everybody has a piece of the puzzle… no one person has the answer”, which is so true. I remember reading an article about actor Adrian Grenier, saying something along the lines of his biggest fear is all of his environmental initiatives have made no impact on the planet. For some reason that really stuck with me. Can you imagine if Continue Reading…

Lindsay Lohan Swears by her Nails (in Court)
Posted 07/07/2010 by Lara
In big news this morning, Lindsay Lohan showed up to court Tuesday afternoon wearing all black and what seemed like a regular multicolored manicure. After closer inspection celebrity blog WWTDD noticed she had adorned the words ‘F_ CK U’ (I’ll let you fill in the blank) onto one of her nails. So while her mouth was saying, “I don’t want you to think I don’t respect you and your terms” to the court, her middle finger was expressing something completely different.
I bet the judge feels incredibly vindicated for giving Lohan a 90-day jail sentence (three times what the prosecutors were seeking). Talk about a beauty statement!

Estee Lauder Buys Smashbox
Posted 05/18/2010 by Lara
Amidst watching a presentation by Eve Pearl yesterday at The Makeup Show, I glanced at my iPhone to see an email from WWD with the headline “Estee Lauder to Buy Smashbox Cosmetics”. I almost fell out of my chair. The makeup company was recently rumored to be on the market with many potential buyers, so while I was caught off guard, the news was not a complete shock. In fact, I figured the buyer would either be the King or Queen of Prestige Beauty –L’Oreal or Estee Lauder. Although considering L’Oreal purchased nail polish brand Essie last month, it seemed about right this bid would go to Lauder.
While the cost has not been disclosed, it has been estimated by sources Smashbox was sold for between $200-$300 Million. Phew!

SPF Tips From Women’s Health Magazine
Posted 05/07/2010 by Lara
I’m not generally one to repost articles, however I received some really great and insightful SPF tips from Women’s Health Magazine in my inbox and thought I would share them with you.
Please note: I haven’t tried any of the products listed below, so I can’t speak for them, however I am intrigued.
1. Protect from the Inside Out
Sun damage causes free radicals, which all edible antioxidants fight. Some work better at protecting against the sun’s rays. Your best bites are reddish-orange foods that are high in lycopene, such as tomatoes, watermelon, pink grapefruit, apricots, and papayas, and foods and beverages that are rich in flavonoids, such as green tea and dark chocolate. You’ll need at least 10 weeks of daily ingestion to optimize the benefits.
2. Seek Shades
Ultra stylish oversize sunglasses are more than just a fashion statement. They also shield the paper-thin skin around your eyes from dangerous UV damage (5 to 10 percent of all skin cancers appear on the eyelids) as well as the formation of fine lines and crow’s-feet. More important, sun exposure can affect Continue Reading…

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Walk of Shame –I mean Fame
Posted 05/06/2010 by Lara
Perhaps Julia Louis-Dreyfus is not the easiest name to spell off the top of your head, but I’m at a complete loss as to how her name was misspelled on the star she received for the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Apparently, the spelling “Julia Luis Dreyfus” (missing both the ‘o’ from ‘Luis’ and the hyphen between ‘Louis’ and ‘Dreyfus’) was approved by several members of the LA Chamber of Commerce and the errors were not discovered until CNN correspondent David Daniel noticed the mistake. Smack! (*hand to forehead*).
Fortunately, the actress had a great sense of humor about the whole situation saying, ‘the misspelling was so perfectly apt, a great metaphor for show business. Right when you think you’ve made it, you get knocked down. It’s an ideal metaphor for how this business works’.
Don’t worry, the star will be fixed, but seriously, how does that even happen? I would have thought only in a Seinfeld episode.

Water Crisis in Boston Ends
Posted 05/04/2010 by Lara
Well I picked a great time to visit Boston. Within a few days of my arrival a pike broke in Weston, MA causing nearly 2 million people in 31 communities in the Boston area (myself included) to lose their supply of clean water. The Mass. Dept. of Public Health issued a warning that tap water was not suitable for drinking, but could be used for bathing, flushing and fire protection. Mixed with the unreasonably hot, humid weather and all I can say is this trip has been a real pleasure. Fortunately, the water is now safe according to reports, just in time for my flight back to New York.
Growing up in the Boston area, I was so over this song. However, it’s never felt more appropriate (although I didn’t love that dirty water). Happy Tuesday Everyone!

The Anti-Hitch
Posted 04/20/2010 by Lara
Somewhere in Iowa, someone’s getting a good laugh. That someone is probably Will Smith’s alter ego in Hitch, Brad, Founder of iDUMP4U, a website where he does just that, breaks up with people (over the phone) on your behalf.
In the age of text, twitter, Facebook, email, instant messenger, is this really necessary? Apparently for some cowards out there, yes! Maybe coward is the wrong word; perhaps customers of this service are just too busy to be bothered. Breakups can be a real time commitment. Plus iDUMP4U averages a 24-hour turn around time (pending the availability of the dumpee to pick up their phone). Either that or someone can’t afford to leave a paper trail.
iDUMP4U charges $10/breakup ($25 if you’re engaged, $50 if you’re married). I can think of a few inconvenient breakups where $10 would have seemed like a bargain to just be done. However, I Continue Reading…
