Dermalogica Wants You to FITE For Change

Posted 03/14/2011 by Lara

Lara with Dermalogica founder, Jane Wurwand

According to the World Bank, the economic empowerment and financial independence of women is one of the greatest drivers of sustainable poverty alleviation in the developing world. Additionally 70% of people living in poverty are women and despite research that shows women who are financially independent can be the greatest agents of change in their communities, only 2% of all international aid money goes to them. Which is why skincare company, Dermalogica has partnered with Kiva.org (the world’s largest personal microlending website) to help alleviate poverty and created FITE (Financial Independence Through Entrepreneurship), a global campaign that promotes gender equality, and helps boost stagnant economies by offering women entrepreneurs in low-income regions of the United States and 56 other countries micro loans.

“We know that the economic empowerment of women is one of the greatest levers for positive social change. What is particularly thrilling about FITE is the opportunity it provides to give that lever a multiplier effect,” says Jane Wurwand, Founder of Dermalogica. As a blogger, I do see (and write about) a lot of philanthropic initiatives, and consider myself a big advocate of giving back—but I often find it difficult seeing this change.  There are so many causes, humanitarian, environmental or otherwise and it feels like just when we ban together to help rebuild one natural disaster, another one hits. At times it can all be rather discouraging but having had the opportunity to meet Jane and hear about her journey to start Dermalogica as well as her devotion to FITE to bring about real change gives me hope. Dior Dismisses Galliano and Introduces the New Face of Miss Dior Cherie: Natalie Portman

Posted 03/02/2011 by Lara

Dior has had quite a week! After a video circulated on Monday where apparently an inebriated John Galliano said, “I love Hitler”, the designer was denounced by Dior ambassador Natalie Portman and later fired by Christian Dior.

Today the couturier, finally spoke out and said, “Anti-Semitism and racism have no part in our society. I unreservedly apologize for my behavior in causing any offence.” Well good luck fixing this mess Galliano! It’s such a tragedy that someone capable of so much beauty can be so ugly.

But the House must go on and I’m excited to share Dior’s new campaign starring Natalie Portman as the new face of Miss Dior Cherie! Notice in the video the bow-tie that a very seductive Portman (baby-bump free) takes from the gentleman is the headband used in the print campaign. Tres chic!

And of course they didn’t forget the swan!

Cosmopolitan to Launch in Armenia with Kim Kardashian on Cover

Posted 02/24/2011 by Lara

Whenever I’m asked my ethnicity and respond with ‘Armenian’, the usual reaction I get is ‘oh, like Kim Kardashian? Do you get that a lot?’

Yes, I get that a lot—and by the way she’s only half Armenian. Although clearly some type of poster child for all that is Armenia in the eyes of many Americans– so it should come as no surprise that when Cosmopolitan Magazine launches their Armenian edition in March, Kim Kardashian will grace the cover. The shocking part of course is that Cosmo is going into Armenia at all! Hrachuchi Utmazyan has been named editor of the publication, which will launch with an initial circulation of 5,000.

While it’s commonly known Armenia was the first country to adopt Christianity, and the suspected landing spot of Noah’s Arc, it’s only in the past few years we discovered they we’re also the first to decent leather shoes and house the oldest known winery. Although those are rarely the claim to fame we account for and probably to Kourtney’s and Khloe’s dismay, neither are they.

“The Cosmopolitan brand has been very successful around the world and we’re pleased to be rolling out our 63rd edition this spring in Armenia,” says president and CEO of Hearst Magazines Continue Reading…

A few months ago I posted an announcement that NARS Cosmetics was opening their first flagship boutique in Spring 2011; and now I’m excited to share their official opening date of February 10th. It would appear they are opening ahead of schedule! The store will be located in NYC’s West Village at 413 Bleecker Street.

Happy National Hat Day

Posted 01/15/2011 by Lara

That’s right, today is National Hat Day!  More heat is lost through your head than any other part of your body so carpe diem and stay warm while making a statement today.

I’m celebrating with a vintage cloche I purchased last year.

Here are some tips compliments of www.eHow.com for how to wear the perfect hat on National Hat Day!

  • Choose a hat that fits your face and complements your skin tone. For instance, a person with a long face shouldn’t wear a hat with a lot of height, but a person with a round face will look good in a tall hat.
  • Restyle your hair. For most hats, it’s best to pull your hair back or let it hang down without styling it around your face. You’re more likely to get the dreaded “hat hair” if you style your hair the same way you do when you’re not wearing a hat.
  • Wear the correct size. Your hat shouldn’t come down over your ears or fall off every time you tilt your head. It shouldn’t give you a Continue Reading…

Homeless Man, Ted Williams No Longer Homeless

Posted 01/09/2011 by Lara

Sometimes I really love the internet. As some of you may already know, a local reporter filmed homeless man, Ted Williams when they found him on a street corner of Columbus Ohio holding a sign that said “I have a God given gift of voice, I’m an ex-radio announcer who has fallen on hard times…”  The reporter told him he needed to work for his dollar and boy did he ever. Showing off his ‘golden voice’, the reporters filmed him and since then the video has gone viral online and has received over 5 million views (and rising) on YouTube alone.

Ted has since appeared on The Today Show, made a cameo on the Late Night show with Jimmy Fallon and done his first post-discover commercial for Kraft Macaroni & Cheese. Additionally he’s received several job offers including one from the Cleavland Cavaliers who have even offered to throw in a house.

Anna Wintour and Carine Roitfeld

Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) reported this morning that Carine Roitfeld, Editor in Chief of French Vogue will be departing from the magazine in a few weeks to “focus on personal projects”.

You may remember Carine Roitfeld’s rumored character, Jacqueline Follet in the movie, The Devil Wears Prada, nemesis to Anna Wintour –I mean Miranda Priestly. Friend or foe, I wonder how this will all play out.

We will have to wait and see. WWD’s complete coverage of the story is not available until Monday. Stay tuned!
