PC Backstage at The Blonds Fall 2012 Show + Hair & Makeup How-To
Posted 03/18/2012 by Lara
Looking back at New York Fashion Week (which ended last month), I need to take a moment to share how exceptional it was concluding the festivities by going backstage to The Blonds Fall 2012 show. The Blonds has been a show that I have sadly missed in preview years due to conflict issues or logistics but never again! It was such a scene and the energy was electrifying. Backstage to the audience outfits to the actual show was beyond an experience!
I was going to make the backstage and show 1 post, but there’s too much amazingness to cover so I’m putting it in two separate ones.
A GLIMPSE BACKSTAGE:
THE HAIR –ahem blond ponytail wigs coming out of helmets!!
The Blonds hair was done by lead stylist, Laurent Philippon for Bumble and Bumble
Inspiration: Biker chicks and Johnny Depp in Cry Baby
Styling Methods: For guys: Wet hair with Thickening Hairspray and blowdry. Warm up Sumowax and apply all over the head. Style as needed to create a swoosh in front.
For girls: Create a wig wrap by spraying hair down with Prep then wrapping hair in sections around the head using Bb.Gel. Pin hair so it lays flat around the crown. Put on a wig cap and put on the helmet. Did I mention the wig was steamed to keep hair perfect?
Bumble and Bumble products used: Thickening Hairspray, Sumowax, Prep, Bb.Gel
{Phillipe Blond, founder and head designer for The Blonds backstage getting her hair done by Laurent Philippon}
{Backstage with it model Sebastien Suave — he showed me his Nintendo belt buckle. Jealous?}
THE NAILS! The team spent 130 hours on them!!!
The Blonds hair was done by lead stylist, Kristina Estabrooks for CND. She and her team spent 130 hours hand detailing biker babe manicures. No nail set was alike – crystals, glitter, leather, Phillipe Blond faces, crushed glass shards and acid washed denim designs were just a few of the styles to grace the runway. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!
THE MAKEUP! Look at this incredible green cat eye!
I’ll just let you read off the MAC Cosmetics face chart to see the products used:

Nivea (& Rebecca Romign + Jerry O’Connell) Wants You to Get Physical
Posted 03/11/2012 by Lara

Rebecca and Jerry get physical on stage
In a world where we use email to catch up, text instead of conversations and watch as online dating replaces any form of ‘love at first live sight’, NIVEA acknowledges the importance of human touch and is on a crusade to take it back!
Launching a Million Moments of Touch Movement, NIVEA has partnered with Lifechangers expert Dr. Drew and celebrity couple Jerry O’Connell and Rebecca Romijn to kick-off this year-long program that aims to take back kissing, hugging and touching one again.
While Dr. Drew presented some interesting facts on how we’re starved for affection (did you know we do touch our cell phones more than we touch a loved one?), out came Rebecca Romign and Jerry O’Connell showing the room just why affection is so important and more fulfilling than any computer or smart phone could ever be. Talking about how much they miss each other when they are apart, and how they incorporate a weekly date night into their routine (sans kids) they reminded us not to lose sight of the importance and joy physical interaction plays in our life. I was ready to kiss them both.
Some interesting stats NIVEA discovered on the road to launching their Million Moments of Touch campaign:
· Nearly equal percentages of women (74.5%) and men (74.4%) agree that Americans are in a state of “skin hunger,” a desire for more touch and human connection than they Continue Reading…

Get the Look: Backstage at Cynthia Rowley Fall 2012 + Sneak Peek at Her Band-Aids
Posted 03/08/2012 by Lara
I am such a fan of Cynthia Rowley from her apparel to Band-Aid collaboration and now her as a person! Minutes before her Fall 2012 show Cynthia Rowley took a break from putting the finishing touches on her show to talk to a few special bloggers *inhale* myself included. And instead of being stressed and in need of a sedative, she was cool and collected and just excited. She talked about the music and the intricate hair style designed for the models and how all the pieces went together support the theme of craftsmanship which was the inspiration for her show.
I’ve never felt so welcome or had as much fun backstage at a show. Generally, I’m in and out, just there to interview the beauty sponsors, however this was no ordinary backstage…
As some of you know after going nut-so over the Cynthia Rowley BAND-AID’s they asked me to be a blogger ambassador last year for the collection! At that time they we’re limited edition, however due to the enormous success and popularity, the duo are collaborating again! And as part of the celebration, BAND-AID hosted a backstage lounge at the show and gave guests a sneak peek at the new collaboration, the BAND-AID Brand Beach Sport Kit. The kit ($10) which will launch May 2012 includes 20 newly designed bandages, 4 NEOSPORIN single use packets, and resealable plastic pouch to hold your beach essentials (and big enough to hold and protect your cell phone!).
So I hung out, made friends (that where I met my new bff Jenni from ISpyDIY!), and was all around blown away by the texture and craftsmanship that went into the hair created by amika. In contrast, MAKE UP FOR EVER did a nude and natural makeup application to balance the look.
GET THE LOOK! Here’s how to recreate the show’s hair and makeup:
Hair Lead Stylist: Duffy for amika
Hair Look: Autumnal Texture
Inspiration: “Cynthia and I wanted the hair to play with texture for the hair look. The clothes this season are so structured we wanted to contrast that with the hair. The idea of this look was for it to be free flowing; there is no beginning and no end.” – Duffy
How Duffy created the hair look:
1. Mouse was applied to the hair and it was rough dryed with the amika NRG Professional Hair Dryer
2. A figure-eight technique was used (around the crown of the head) which was created by pinning the hair around bobby pins
3. The figure-eight shape was sealed in with heat from the amika x Cynthia Rowley styler
4. Tight curls were created using a hot rod
5. The hair was then dragged out and brushed to create volume
6. Pieces were pulled and pinned
Since each girl’s hair was different Duffy selected the final style based on each individual girl, their personality and the clothes they looks they were modeling.
Makeup Lead Stylist: MAKE UP FOR EVER ALLIANCE artist, Lottie
Makeup Look/Inspiration: The look was inspired by the women of the 40s – effortlessly natural, empowered, and clean. The skin had a dewy finish with supple bare lips. To add a slightly masculine edge, Lottie groomed the brows creating a full and fluffy appearance.
How Lottie created the makeup look:
Complexion: Lottie first mixed MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Invisible Cover Foundation with MAKE UP FOR EVER Uplight #12. She applied this mixture all over, which gave the models a flawless dewy canvas. To finish the look and set the make up, she used MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Microfinish Powder.
Brows: Lottie brushed the brows upwards to create a fluffy appearance. For added fullness, she filled in individual hairs with MAKE UP FOR EVER Brow Pencil and MAKE UP FOR EVER Waterproof Eyebrow Corrector. The brows were then kept in place using MAKE UP FOR EVER Brow Seal.
Lips: The lips were supple and hydrated with MAKE UP FOR EVER Moisturizing Lip Balm.

Valentino Introduces a New Fragrance for Her: Valentina
Posted 03/07/2012 by Lara
In a recent visit to the Valentino showroom, I met Valentina. Or rather, I should say experienced Valentina as she is a fragrance, not a person. Taking the journey through 3 rooms; Valentino’s Spring collection, the Valentina advertising campaign, followed by an introduction of the formula by the perfumers, gave me a much deeper understanding and connection to the Eau de Parfum.
“I just women to feel beautiful”, Valentino’s very essence and foundation for the House of Valentino translated into a fragrance. Keeping elements of couture he used his iconic flowers to adorn the bottle. A unique floral oriental, this fragrance is feminine and delicate while still exuding strength and confidence, much like the women Valentino embodies in the ad campaign featuring model, Freja Beha Erichsen.
Freja has that edge and uniqueness to her, and yet when looking at her their this underlying innocence that makes her perfect for the face of Valentina. The advertisement depicts her as an heiress/socialite being called down to her elaborate 21st birthday party but is sneaking out to soak in the streets of Rome and create her own adventure.
After two years of development, Valentina came to fruition with the help of perfumers Alberto Morillas and Olivier Cresp. Composing a fresh floral oriental which is inspired by the streets of Rome and the scents in the air, many of the notes are authentic to Italy. The heart of the fragrance is orange blossoms, jasmine tuberose and wild strawberries mixed with top notes of bergamot from Calabria and white truffles from Alba, which settle on the base notes of cedar, vanilla and amber. This is the first fragrance to use white truffles in it, and it adds a soft quality to this very unique and original fragrance. Masked in a vintage italiana perfume bottle, I’m so happy to have this fragrance in my collection and have been wearing it everyday. It’s whimsical essence is feminine without being too sweet or overpowering and just a lovely day fragrance that’s perfect for spring.

Valentino ‘Valentina‘ Eau de Parfum (2.7oz/$108, 1.7oz/$80) is available at fine retailers including Bergdorf Goodman, Saks, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s and Nordstom.

Backstage at Alice + Olivia F/W 2012 Collection + Chignon Hair How-To
Posted 03/05/2012 by Lara
Going backstage for the alice + olivia by Stacey Bendet is always a treat. Getting a peak at her Fall/Winter 2012 collection before it’s being released and watching all the action backstage as the models are transformed into works of art. Playing off this diverse Lolita-inspired collection which puts a fresh, mix-and-match twist on dressing up for a dinner party, Bendet collaborated with Sebastian Professional lead stylist Anthony Cole to create a swept-back, loosely constructed chignons. Coupled with a dark, bold lip and black smokey-eye from Stila, the look balanced this combination of feminine and edginess we saw throughout the collection.
HAIR LEAD STYLIST: Anthony Cole for Sebastian Professional
HOW-TO:
1. On damp hair, apply a palmful of Sebastian Professional Whipped Crème throughout. Then, layer in a palmful of Mousse Forte. This combination will give the hair long-lasting, defrizzed body.
2. Blow-dry smooth using a large round brush. Once dry, divide hair in half horizontally, from recession to the back of the crown. Pin aside the top section and pull the bottom into a tight ponytail at the occipital bone.
3. Twist the ponytail around the base and pin to secure. Spray with Sebastian Professional Shaper hairspray for shape and hold.
4. Take down the top section and create a middle part. Taking one side at a time, smooth back each section to twist and pin around the chignon in the back. Be sure to keep the hair loose in the front so the hairline does not show.
5. Detail random pieces of the chignon with Sebastian Professional Craft Clay for matte hold. Pull pieces from under each top section loose to frame the face.
6. Once in shape, lightly spray Sebastian Professional Trilliant over the finished look for a touch of shimmer and shine.

SEBASTIAN PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS USED:
- Whipped Crème – Ultra-light styler that nourishes and liftscurls and waves for a silky, shiny finish ($18.95)
- Mousse Forte – Strong hold mousse that creates strong-lasting de-frizzed curls and waves ($13.95)
- Shaper – Brushable working hairspray to create direction, lift and control with a medium hold ($15.95)
- Craft Clay – Re-sculpting clay that redefines matte-hold styles to separate and re-style texture (15.95)
- Trilliant – Thermal Protection and Shimmer Complex for ultra-light body and a glamorous shiny finish ($19.95)

Makeovers with Illamasqua
Posted 03/01/2012 by Lara
Since making a splash state side with an exclusive partnership with Sephora; the UK beauty line Illamasqua, known for it’s dramatic looks and subversive inspiration, offers a wide variety of unique shades, professional finishes, and versatile application options. After posting about the nail varnish, and loving it last month– I was excited to play with the rest of the color line. Lucky for me the team was invited to meet with product development head David Horne and learn about the line, complete with make-up application.
Makeup artist, Kim Anderson took the lead and gave me a natural, daytime shimmery look, focusing on my eyes for extra emphasis.
After using Satin Primer on my face and applying Rich Liquid Foundation, Kim went to work on my eyes using a mix of Powder Eye Shadow in Fatal and Cream Pigment Eye Shadow in Mould to create a look that was intense in color but muted in tone and finish. After succeeding in making my eyes intensely green by using a shadow with purple in it, she highlighted my cheeks with Cream Blusher in Rude (the brands top seller).
Sharing a few tricks of the trade (that I will be using from now on) she rubbed the heel of her hand in the cream blush and applied it to my cheeks, she then blended it with the opposite side of her hand creating a perfectly symmetrical look. I really like the Rude blush shade as it’s so versatile and works on so many different skin Continue Reading…

Oscar Beauty Trends: From Bold Lips to Beautiful Buns
Posted 02/27/2012 by Lara
Besides watching the Academy Awards every year to take note of every movie I need to add to my queue, I get equally excited (if not more so) for the red carpet coverage. Then of course the next morning it’s fun to read all of the buzz and reactions to show’s fashion and beauty looks. Earlier, I posted some of my favorite looks, now hear from celebrity hairstylist and makeup artist Gocha Hawkins, and owner of Gocha Salon on some of the big beauty and hair trends we saw from last night and how you can get the look.
Good Side

Stars like Busy Philipps, Maya Rudolph, and Stacy Keibler rocked the side-swept look. Gocha explains, how you can too: “The side-swept style was a big winner on the red carpet last night. With celebrities like Maya Rudolph stepping out with big, voluminous curls, many women will be coveting this look for prom and wedding season. This style works best for women with side parts, which provides a natural separation for hair. Create big, impactful waves with large hot rollers, and pull back the side with less thickness. Spritz with hairspray for hold. If you want to go with a more whimsical version of the look, you can secure with a hair pin that provides a little bit of a bling factor, and gives more of a guarantee that hair will stay in place.”
Head Bangers

There was no shortage of bold bangs on last night’s red carpet,as we saw from such celebrities as Rooney Mara, Rose Byrne, and Anna Faris. However, for some women, bangs are not as wearable, says Gocha. “The bob with straight bangs is really making a comeback as a look for the spring. Rose Byrne and Anna Faris really nail the look with sleek, smooth hair turned inward to define the bob cut. For women with long, oval faces, or heart shaped faces, blunt, straight bangs are a very flattering look. For others, different variations of a bang are more flattering, such as side-swept or soft, featured looks. It’s important to know the shape of your face when getting this cut, and consult your hairstylist before making the request. The biggest thing to remember with this look is that you’ll need to schedule regular trims. Every four to six weeks is the general rule of thumb to keep bangs looking their absolute best.”
Beautiful Buns
Tina Fey, Jennifer Lopez, and Sandra Bullock led the pack in stunning, upswept styles. Gocha explains, “I really love the look of the top knot that Jennifer Lopez wore on the red carpet. Overall, her look for me was a winner. The hair style really allowed the dress to shine, which is what you want when you are going with such a high impact frock. To get the look at home, start by pulling your hair into a high, slicked back ponytail, using a product such as a hair wax or pomade to create a smooth finish. If your hair is super fine, you may need to do some teasing at the base of the ponytail for a little volume, which I always appreciate with a top knot. Next, section hair into two parts and loop and twist around the base, wrapping everything with a small, sleek hair elastic.” To create a messier look similar to Tina Fey’s, tease hair at the crown for volume and pull into a lower bun that starts at the top of the back of your head.
Bold Lip

There was certainly a winner in the makeup department last night, and that was the bold red lip. Stars embraced this look with confidence, and proved that the bold lip trend isn’t going anywhere. From Angelina Jolie, to Michelle Williams both worked the bold lip with very different gowns. “Angelina Jolie went the simple yet stunning direction with her dress, and she adopted the same mentality when it came to her makeup and hair. Paired with an uncomplicated, messy hairstyle, Angelina’s soft makeup with a bold lip highlighted one of her best assets. Keeping the other makeup minimal really lets the red lip shine and become the focus of the face. Michelle Williams used a Continue Reading…

Oscar Favorites: Get the Look! Emma Stone, Michelle Williams, and Gwyneth Paltrow
Posted 02/27/2012 by Lara
Last night, we celebrated the 84th annual Academy Awards. With a lot of awards being passed out, I’m giving the best red-carpets looks to to Emma Stone, Michelle Williams, Rooney Mara and Gwyneth Paltrow! Although Octavia Spencer also deserves a shout out for glowing head-to-toe in Tadashi Shoji. Here’s the inside scoop on the beauty looks and how-tos for some of my favorite leading ladies:
EMMA STONE (wearing Giambattista Valli):
HAIR: Emma had a fresh and modern bun with an elegant twist created by Mara Roszak for Couture Colour.
“I wanted to keep Emma’s hair structured without feeling too stiff and the bun allowed for her look to be simple and elegant yet fresh,” said Roszak.
She began by using Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment on Emma’s wet hair working the product in from the ends and working up to keep her locks looking healthy and shiny. Roszak then blow-dried it straight keeping it sleek and simple in front. To create the bun, Mara pulled hair into a mid-height ponytail and began wrapping pieces of hair keeping it loose and wide and securing each piece with bobbypin. She then finished the look with Couture Colour’s Pequi Oil Finishing Polish to complete the look.
BODY GLOW: Emma basked in a pastel tan thanks to Rachel Goodwin for St. Tropez, who used their Rose Skin Illuminator on Emma’s arms, shoulders and collar bones to add a pink undertone to compliment her dress.
MICHELLE WILLIAMS (wearing Louis Vuitton):
HAIR: Michelle Williams was fashionably glamorous with her blonde pixie by Chris McMillan for Couture Colour and Wella Professionals.
Chris began by using Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment on Michelle’s short hair to keep it fresh and vibrant without weighing it down. Then applied Sebastian Professional Mousse Forte to wet hair, and let it to air dry. With a small round brush, he finished off with a blow dry to give the hair more height. Then used his hands to set the part and bangs and finish with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray to set in place.
Chris says, “The reason I love the Wella products is that they are light and don’t weigh the hair down as the night wears on. Some stylers can actually make the hair look darker if they’re too heavy, but with the Wella hairspray hair is shiny and touchable.”
GWYNETH PALTROW (wearing Tom Ford):

TAN: Gwyneth Paltrow complemented her white gown (complete with cape) with a flawless tan created by Leslie Lopez for St. Tropez; using their Gold Skin Illuminator on her cheek bones, brow bone, and collarbone.
MAKEUP: Gwyneth Paltrow then worked with celebrity makeup artist, Leslie Lopez using NARS Cosmetics to enhance her sun-kissed glow.
“It’s elegantly bronzed,” said celebrity makeup artist Leslie Lopez for NARS Cosmetics. “The dress makes such a statement, but it also has no color, so we needed to create a makeup look that complemented the dress and was still sophisticated enough for the red carpet. I really loved the Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer because it gives a sun-kissed look to her skin, and perfect against a white dress!”
Here are the products Leslie used so you can recreate the look:
FACE - NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30 PA +++, with Super Orgasm Illuminator patted onto the apples of the cheeks.
EYES - The champagne side of NARS Alhambra Duo Eyeshadow was applied on the eyelid for a pop of gold, followed by a Maybelline brown liquid eyeliner along the lashline. The look was then finished with NARS Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara.
LIPS - NARS Odalisque Larger Than Life Lip Gloss
As for my other favorite look (and new girl crush), Rooney Mara, she wowed the crowd with her edgy bangs and bold lips; which perfectly contrasted her stunning Givenchy gown. I wish I had more details to offer as it’s now time for me to scour the internet in search of that red lipstick!
