Cheat Sheet for Running a Half Marathon

11May10

About a months ago, I posted about my experience running my first NYC Half Marathon. To sum it up, the most I’d ever run prior to that day was 4 miles (and I can count on three fingers how many times that was).   Yet somehow despite all of this I managed to run the 13.1 miles in 2 hours and 11 minutes.  The strange part being I did it without stopping and quite easily.  Or rather the crazy part considering I’m not a runner.

So now for the big question everyone (and I mean every friend, acquaintance, and person I ever worked or went to school with) has been asking me, how did I do it?

First off, I’ll start with:

  • Have a positive attitude and some confidence in yourself. Seriously, if I can do it anyone who is physically able probably can.
  • Once you’ve established you’re going to try to run it, don’t more

The Wellness Cafe at Norma Kamali

4Apr10

I received an invitation from Norma Kamali to visit her new Wellness Café.  Located at the Norma Kamali flagship store on 56th Street, I was no stranger to the café considering I used to work around the corner.  Tucked in the back of her store, it was an olive oil haven.  Filled with all types of pastries and snacks (all olive oil based); I was a sucker for the lavender shortbread.

I had heard during New York Fashion Week Norma made some adjustments to her life and was adding more raw and vegan elements into her diet. The café is an extension of Kamaili had thus evolved with her.  I was excited to see the changes to the café, and even though I knew the olive oil base would always prevail, I had a feeling this would be the demise of my beloved shortbread.

As some of you know I’ve been on an oil kick for sometime now, olive oil, macadamia nut oil, argon oil, coconut oil, essential oils . . . you get the point.  What began as something I only used on my body has now fully been integrated onto my face and hair as part of my regiment.  I’ve also been on a recent health kick (or at least trying to be), the downfall of months of traveling and abiding by the ‘there’s no calories on vacation’ rule.  And to that all I can say is it’s all fun and games until bathing suit season.  So perfect timing for this invitation, I would be in good company, and I can use all the inspiration I can get!

So through the entrance, past the mannequins to the back of the store I go.  Aesthetically it’s still very much the original café, however more

The Long and Windy Road to Running the NYC Half Marathon

21Mar10

I’m going to cut to the chase since this turned out to be a rather long post.  So for all of you who would like to be spared the page long story . . . in a nutshell, I ran the New York City Half Marathon (13.1 miles) this morning in 2 hours, and 11 minutes.  My first race ever as well as the longest distance I have ever run (by far) without stopping!  Despite not being able to feel my legs, this was quite possibly one of the most amazing experiences of my life.  How did I get myself into this mess?

My story begins last November at Morandi.  I attended an intimate birthday dinner where one very charming and persuasive ABC weather girl, Heidi Jones managed to convince the entire table of 6 that running the New York City Half Marathon was a great idea.  That is until the next morning when the wine wore off and suddenly the thought of doing 13.1 miles to a bunch of otherwise non-runners seemed doubtful.  Some emails circulated, much grunting was done, but with more

NYFW Retreat – Robert Verdi’s Luxe Lounge

20Feb10

I love New York Fashion Week (NYFW) — the people watching, the clothes, the makeup/hair, the backstage passes, and all around fabulousness.  However it does have it’s down side — the weather was cold and icy, and it felt like every show was miles apart.  Everyone assumes NYFW = Bryant Park, but many of the shows were held at alternate venues including Milk Studios, Chelsea Art Museum, The Altman Building, and Exit Art.  Not a fun trek in your Manolo’s.  You’re stuck waiting for a cab in the freezing cold with all the hustle and bustle for a fifteen-minute show.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s worth every minute, exhausting yes, but when I received an invitation to Robert Verdi’s 2010 Fashion Retreat, I was not about to pass up the opportunity.

Robert Verdi’s Luxe Lounge was beyond my expectations. The style icon was not only charismatic, and full of smiles, but also the most fabulous host.  He thought of everything a girl needed to relax, and escape from all the running around.  From healthy snacks and juices by Blue Print Cleanse, to manicures by Ginger + Liz Nail Polish, to blowouts by Phyto, the haven pampered guests from more

A Maui Must! Zip-Line in Kapalua

6Feb10

While in Maui, I received an invitation to do the ‘Swing and Zip Upper Mountain Loop’ at Kapolau Adventures.  Having never done a zip-line before, I had no idea what to expect.  The only instruction I had, was to wear sneakers.

Upon arrival, my partner in crime, Jamie, and I were given windbreaker jackets and helmets (I got what resembled a ‘Bob the Builder’ hat, since I was told I had an awkward shaped head – always knew I was a little different).  They drove us to the top of the mountain on the edge of the Pu’u Kukui Watershed Preserve where adventure began!

The five-hour excursion consisted of multiple small hikes in between four amazing zip-lines, a giant swing, and ultimately lunch on the mountain.  Hands down one of the most breathtaking, amazing experiences of my life.  And what a work out!

When the guide mentioned that the last zip-line was 2.300 feet, I was a little anxious about going down it, though I felt completely safe and secure the whole time.  The harness more
